Chapter 7: Gabriel

I paced back and forth in my hut, waiting for the team of humans to arrive in the village, along with Sophie. I hadn’t seen her since our time in the forest, and I grew more and more tense the longer I thought about what we had done, how I had lost control and tasted her, how nothing had ever tasted better. I had to remind myself that I wasn’t to take a mate, that even if I did, it would end in tragedy. I had to remind myself that I couldn’t be soft for anyone, not even Sophie, not even when she smiled.

My heart leapt in my chest when I heard a knock at the door, and I had to steel myself once again before I opened it. Sophie stood there along with three other women, a bright smile on her face that gave me butterflies as it always did. I frowned at her, not allowing myself to bend again, though I was relieved to see her after a long week with her gone. Her smile faltered slightly and I tore my eyes away from her, looking at the three women, along with Harley, standing in the doorway. I went outside to join them.

“Is this the team?” I asked, looking the women over.

“Yes,” Sophie said, gesturing to the first woman. “This is Lily English. Shifters are her area of expertise. She thinks she has some idea of what might be going on here.”

“What is it?” I asked her.

“We don’t have time for that right now,” Sophie said. “Harley is going to show everyone around before the sun goes down.”

“Okay,” I grunted. The next woman stepped forward, pressing her hand forward to shake mine.

“My name is Camilla,” she said in a voice as firm and strong as her handshake. She looked me in the eye, chin tilted slightly upward. “I’m here to train your people. Sophie tells me they are lacking.”

“What exactly will you teach them?”

“I am an expert in a wide variety of martial arts,” she said. “I’m also combat-trained. I’m going to show them how to defend themselves if they are attacked—if we are attacked.”

I nodded, looking at the third woman. “And you? You’re the doctor?”

“I’m the head doctor. Alicia Thomas,” she said. “I have a team of five coming in tomorrow morning.”

“Why do we need six of you?” I asked her.

“Because sixty people died last week, Gabriel,” Sophie said. I didn’t look at her but cleared my throat and looked over the women’s shoulders to where Harley stood.

“Show them around,” I said to her. “All of you report back to me tomorrow morning. I want more details.”

“Okay,” Harley said. I watched as the four of them turned and walked away, my arms crossed over my chest. Sophie stayed where she was without following them, and I felt her eyes on my face.

“Let’s go inside,” she said, taking my arm. I allowed her to pull me into the room and shut the door behind us. I
